Tater and Gem have been sniffing around for the best things to do this week, and the Valley finally feels like early fall: cooler evenings, Art in the Park sprawling through Julia Davis, a free multicultural weekend at JUMP, outdoor Robin Hood still running, and a one-night Bonnie Raitt show on Outlaw Field.

Forecast looks mostly dry and seasonable through the weekend, with a breezy Saturday and a chance of light showers Sunday — welcome September air after a long, dry stretch. Peek at the sky before you lock in outdoor theater, Fall Flights, or a full day on the grass at Art in the Park.

Here are a few fun picks worth adding to your calendar.

The Vibe: The Northwest’s big open-air art weekend — about 240 artists, food, live music, kids’ activities, and a park full of people browsing, snacking, and people-watching. Free to walk in. New to the Valley? This is the classic post–Labor Day tradition, not a one-booth craft fair.

Parking note: No general public parking inside Julia Davis Park during the festival (limited disability-permit lots near the Rose Garden / Zoo Boise). Free yellow shuttle buses run about every 30 minutes Fri–Sat 9:30 AM–8:00 PM and Sunday 9:30 AM–5:00 PM from downtown, Ann Morrison / BSU Brady Garage, and Boise Towne Square (near Dillard’s). No Boise State shuttle stop on Saturday because of a football home game. ParkBOI garage at 11th & Front is $5 all day; other downtown ParkBOI garages $9; Brady Garage $5 (select Art in the Park rate). Bike racks on the Greenbelt corners of the park.

Best For: Families, visitors, art shoppers, and anyone who wants a full weekend plan without buying a ticket.

The Vibe: Blues, roots, and slide-guitar magic on the grass at Outlaw Field — picnic blankets, low-back chairs, and a Thursday night that feels like summer’s last big outdoor concert.

Handy extras: Soft-sided coolers under size limits OK; sealed non-alcoholic drinks and picnic food OK; no glass, no hard coolers, no umbrellas, no high-back chairs. Free (limited) parking — carpool, bike, or use the ADA-accessible downtown shuttle from Broad Street between 8th and 9th (starts 1.5 hours before show). Rain or shine.

Best For: Date night, multi-gen music fans, and anyone who wants a lawn concert without a stadium trek.

The Vibe: Free downtown celebration of Idaho’s many cultures — dance, music, storytelling, poetry, film, workshops, and global food — landing at JUMP for the first time. Family-friendly and easy to dip in for an hour or stay all evening.

The Vibe: Outdoor adventure theater under the Warm Springs sky — daring feats, romance, and a Marion who steals the show. Season runs September 4–27; this week still has plenty of nights left.

If you’re only picking one thing this week, make it Art in the Park.

Three days, free entry, ~240 artists, food, music, and Julia Davis Park at its busiest-best. New neighbors: this is the Boise Art Museum’s big annual fundraiser weekend — plan shuttle or bike parking, and give yourself time to wander.

Why Gem likes it: It works for toddlers in strollers, teens hunting stickers, and grandparents hunting pottery — same park, same free walk-in.

If your usual date night is dinner and then scrolling for something to do, this is your upgrade. Pack a picnic (soft cooler, low-back chairs), grab tickets if any remain, and settle onto the grass at the Botanical Garden for blues and roots under a September sky. Special guest Jon Cleary opens the night. Shuttle from downtown if you want to skip the parking shuffle.
