Tater and Gem have been sniffing around for the best things to do this week, and the Valley is serving up a proper last-call-for-summer mix: fair food, outdoor Shakespeare, free concerts, historic planes over Nampa, and the first balloons of Labor Day week.
The wildfire haze has eased this week. It's still late-summer warm. Peek at the sky before you lock in the Fair, Shakespeare, or the balloons.
Here are a few fun picks worth adding to your calendar.
1. Western Idaho Fair (final days)
The Vibe: Classic Idaho fair energy - carnival lights, livestock barns, 4-H, fried everything, and grandstand concerts included with your gate ticket.
When & Where: Thursday, August 27 – Sunday, August 30 · Thu–Fri 12 PM–11 PM · Sat 11 AM–11 PM · Sun 11 AM–10 PM · Expo Idaho, Garden City
Best For: Families, fair-food fans, kids, teens, grandparents, and anyone who still thinks summer needs one more carnival ride.
Fair food, carnival rides, and kids with sticky fingers? This is basically my Super Bowl. Catch me near the funnel cake, pretending I have a ticket.

Thursday 12–4 PM is BOGO admission (no restamp until 4 PM). Friday 12–4 PM is Student Savings Day: half-price with a student ID. Saturday is STEM Day, 11 AM–8 PM, north of Expo Idaho (STEM Day). Friday night’s grandstand headliner is Lee Brice (concert GA is free with Fair admission; reserved seats are extra and sell in advance). Official pages split on whether the show starts at 7:30 or 8:00. Peek at idahofair.com before you roll. Carnival wristbands are $42 weekdays / $47 weekends and do not include gate admission. No tickets or stamps after 9 PM Thursday–Saturday (no entry after 10 PM). Sunday: no tickets, stamps, or entry after 8 PM.
2. Idaho Shakespeare Festival — The Winter’s Tale (closing weekend)
The Vibe: Outdoor theater, pre-show music, a picnic blanket, and one of the most Boise ways to spend a night out. This modern-verse telling is all about jealousy, forgiveness, and a last-minute miracle. Closing night is Saturday.

Blanket, picnic, live theater, and a late-August sky? This is my kind of Treasure Valley magic. Tater calls it fancy picnic night.

3. Warbird Roundup
The Vibe: Historic warbirds on the ground and in the air, museum access, food trucks, and a Heritage Flight with an F-35A and a P-47. Bring a camp chair. Leave the pup at home.
When & Where: Saturday, August 29 – Sunday, August 30 · Gates 8:00 AM · Flying about 10:00 AM–2:40 PM (weather and maintenance permitting) · No entry after 3:00 PM · Museum closes 5:00 PM · Warhawk Air Museum / Nampa Municipal Airport
Best For: Families, aviation fans, veterans, and anyone who likes a sky full of history.
I would like to file a formal protest about the no-pets rule. That said, even I have to admit a P-51 named Boise Bee is a pretty good look.

Flight Deck (VIP) is sold out both days. General parking is at the Ford Idaho Center with air-conditioned shuttles 7 AM–6 PM. Kids 10 and under are free with a paid adult.

4. Tuesdays on the Creek — Layne Bowen Band + Farm to Fork Market
The Vibe: A relaxed Caldwell evening on the plaza: live music, sunset, farm and craft vendors, and a good excuse to stay out on a school-night Tuesday.

Best For: Families, music lovers, casual date night, and anyone who wants an easy weeknight outing.
Free music by the creek sounds like a pretty solid Tuesday. Bonus points if someone drops a fry.

5. Spirit of Boise Balloon Classic (35th annual)
The Vibe: Boise’s five-day balloon classic at Ann Morrison Park — colorful envelopes at dawn, a ticketed Friday Nite Glow, and that last-call-for-summer sky. New to town? This is the full event, not just one morning.
When & Where: Wednesday, September 2 – Sunday, September 6 · Ann Morrison Park, 1000 S Americana Blvd, Boise
Best For: Early-rising families, photographers, new residents, and anyone who wants Labor Day week to start in the sky.

Western Idaho Fair
If you’re only picking one thing this week, make it the Fair.
This one gets Tater’s top paw because it has a little bit of everything: rides, food, animals, music, vendors, and that last-weekend-of-summer glow. Kids get the carnival. Adults get the food. Why Tater likes it: It’s one of those events where everybody can find something to enjoy — and the Thursday BOGO / Friday student deals make it easier to go twice.

The Winter’s Tale at Idaho Shakespeare Festival
If your usual date night is dinner and then scrolling for something to do, this is your upgrade. Grab dinner, bring a blanket, catch the pre-show music, and settle in for outdoor theater under the Idaho sky. Saturday is closing night, so this is the last chance for this title.
Tater calls this fancy picnic night. I call it a perfect late-summer date.

Eagle Gazebo Concert Series - Problamatic
A Thursday-night outdoor concert in Heritage Park. Bring a blanket and a lawn chair, wander the park, and let a local band handle the soundtrack. Very Eagle.

Best For: Families, casual date night, and anyone who wants live music without the downtown parking puzzle.
Not every outing needs carnival rides. Sometimes a park, a blanket, and a local band is exactly the right move.
