Hello, October.

Apparently the Treasure Valley has decided that if the calendar says fall, we are going to FALL.

This weekend we've got Oktoberfest in Downtown Meridian, a giant cider block party in Boise, kids driving actual construction equipment, pumpkins along the Greenbelt, a brand-new harvest celebration in Caldwell and a circus tent at The Village.

Tater heard the words "brat eating contest" and has begun what he calls his training regimen.

It appears to involve lying on the floor near the refrigerator.

Gem remains unimpressed.

Here are the best things we found for you this week.

The Vibe: Downtown Meridian goes full Bavaria for the day with German-inspired food, local beer, live music, around 70 vendors, family activities and a ridiculous assortment of contests involving strudel, pretzels, brats and steins.

In other words, this event has range.

When & Where: Saturday, October 3 · 10 AM–9 PM · Idaho Avenue & 2nd Street, Downtown Meridian. Children's activities in the morning, Boise Edelweiss 12–3:45 PM, contests through the afternoon, Soul Patch closing 7:30–9 PM.

Best For: Families earlier in the day, groups of friends, couples, food lovers and anyone who owns lederhosen and has been waiting patiently for an excuse.

The Vibe: Imagine telling a construction-equipment-obsessed kid that instead of watching an excavator from behind a fence, they're going to climb into one. That's Dozer Day. Kids get into the driver's seat of real dozers, excavators and other heavy construction equipment with professional operators beside them.

When & Where: Saturday & Sunday, October 3–4 · Dennis Technical Education Center, Boise · Tickets required.

Best For: Families, younger kids, future engineers and every child who has ever made their parents stop the car to watch a backhoe.

The Vibe: A giant cider-filled block party right in Downtown Boise. The 4th annual Idaho Cider Fest brings together cider makers from around the Northwest along with local food, vendors and games. Admission is FREE and all ages are welcome. Cider tasting tokens are purchased separately.

When & Where: Saturday, October 3 · 12–6 PM · Bannock Street between 8th & 9th, Downtown Boise

Best For: Couples, friend groups, cider fans and anyone looking for an easy Saturday afternoon downtown.

Gem's Take: "Walk around downtown, grab some food, sample some cider and call it a date. I approve." · Tater's Take: "I'll be focusing on the food portion of this itinerary." · Idaho Cider Fest

The Vibe: Caldwell is launching a brand-new signature fall event this year, leaning straight into what makes this area Idaho. Hay Day celebrates Caldwell's agricultural and western heritage with pumpkins, grape-harvest activities, hops, seeds, antique tractors, industrial equipment, vendors, hands-on agricultural activities and live entertainment. Live music from Boulder Hill and Fiddle Express, country swing and line dancing from Dirt Road Dancing, plus Chicken Drop Bingo.

When & Where: Saturday, October 3 · 1–5 PM · Indian Creek Plaza, Caldwell

Best For: Families, kids, fall lovers and anyone who prefers their seasonal festivals with a distinctly Idaho flavor.

Gem's Take: "Pumpkins, line dancing and antique tractors. Caldwell understood the assignment." · Tater's Take: "I need more information about Chicken Drop Bingo." · So do we. · Hay Day

The Vibe: Green Acres is bringing the pumpkin-patch feeling right into Downtown Boise for an entire weekend. Expect pumpkins and fall decorations, free pumpkin painting, crafts and activities, seasonal treats, food trucks, vendors and live music throughout the weekend. Entry is FREE, and the event is both family friendly and dog friendly. Tater would like us to emphasize the last part.

When & Where: Friday, October 2 through Sunday, October 4 · Green Acres Food Truck Park · 767 S. Pioneer Street, Boise

Best For: Families, couples, dog owners, friend groups and anyone who wants a low-pressure fall outing where food is conveniently nearby.

Tater's Take: "Dog friendly. Food trucks. I don't see the downside." · Gem's Take: "The downside is that you're coming with us."

This one gets the crown this week because it checks an impressive number of boxes. You can bring the kids in the morning, wander through roughly 70 vendors, grab German-inspired food, hear live music, watch ridiculous contests, meet up with friends and stay into the evening.

The official schedule runs from 10 AM all the way through 9 PM, with children's activities, Boise Edelweiss, cornhole, strudel eating, a brat eating contest, the Stein Hold at Sunset and evening music from Soul Patch.

That's not an event. That's a Saturday.

Tater's Strategy: "Arrive early. Pace yourself. Peak at the brat contest."

We're not entirely sure Tater understands Oktoberfest. But we're also not entirely sure he doesn't.

Dinner and a movie is fine. Dinner and a giant circus tent is considerably harder to forget.

Venardos Circus has brought its intimate big-top experience to The Village at Meridian, with acrobatics, aerial performances, comedy and theatrical circus entertainment. The Meridian engagement runs only through Sunday, October 4, so this is the final weekend to catch it.

The Date Night Plan: Grab dinner at The Village, wander around for a bit, then head under the big top for the show.

Gem's Take: "Aerialists under a circus tent beats scrolling Netflix for 45 minutes trying to decide what to watch." · Tater's Take: "Will there be popcorn?" · Almost certainly the most important question.

This is exactly the kind of thing we love putting in Hidden Gem. On Sunday, Preservation Idaho is opening up a collection of private mid-century homes on Mobley Drive in Boise's East End for its 20th annual Heritage Homes Tour. This year's event is also the organization's first-ever block-party-style tour and includes homes connected to noted Boise architects Charles Hummel and Art Troutner.

When & Where: Sunday, October 4 · 11 AM–3 PM · Mobley Drive, Boise East End · Tickets recommended (private homes / capacity).

Best For: Architecture fans, history lovers, design nerds and people who appreciate a very different kind of Sunday afternoon.
